How to cancel Sky or NOW broadband: notice, fees, router

How to cancel Sky or NOW broadband: notice, fees, router

Sky or NOW: the quick version

Sky Broadband and NOW Broadband are both run by Sky UK Limited (NOW is one of its trading names), so leaving them works in similar ways. What you do depends on whether a new provider is taking over your line. Switching? Order with the new provider and let it handle the move. Cancelling outright? You give notice yourself, and inside your minimum term an early termination charge (ETC, Sky's name for an exit fee) may apply unless a free exit fits your situation. This guide uses Sky's and NOW's own help pages and terms (checked October 2026); the rules that apply to every provider are in our general guide to cancelling broadband, and if you're leaving Virgin Media instead, read how to cancel Virgin Media broadband. We compare deals through a partner widget and can't cancel or switch anything for you.

Which Sky or NOW contract do you have?

Start here, because the rules differ. Your Contract Summary, the short summary of the main terms that providers must give you before you sign up, has a "Duration, renewal and termination" section that must state how long the contract runs and the fees for ending it early. Our guide to reading a broadband contract summary shows where to look.

Contract

Minimum term, as the provider describes it

Sky Broadband and Sky Talk

Normally 12, 18 or 24 months (Sky's April 2025 terms); Sky's broadband page lists separate 24-month terms for Broadband, Talk, Broadband Boost and WiFi Max

NOW Broadband Powered by Sky ("Supplied by Sky")

Separate 24-month contracts for broadband, Sky Talk and Sky WiFi Max

NOW memberships listed on NOW's exit-fee help page (Super Fibre, Fab Fibre, Brilliant Broadband)

12 months on contract plans; No Contract plans roll every 30 days

Two things catch people out. Sky's exit-fee page says a minimum term can also apply if you take up certain offers, and that it tells you this before you accept, so if you've accepted an offer since you signed up, check whether it came with a minimum term of its own. And Sky's terms say cancelling or switching Sky Broadband automatically cancels Sky Talk, and vice versa, unless Sky says otherwise. NOW customers: NOW's Broadband & Calls contract (April 2025) sets out two plans, the Saver Plan (normally 12 months) and the No Contract Plan (rolling every 30 days), and doesn't mention NOW Broadband Powered by Sky, which NOW's terms page says is supplied by Sky on separate 24-month contracts. So that contract doesn't appear to cover Powered by Sky; if you're unsure which you have, your Contract Summary or NOW's My Account will say.

Cancelling a new Sky order in the 31-day cooling-off period

The legal cooling-off period in Sky's terms is 14 days, but Sky's help page gives UK customers an enhanced 31 days to cancel Sky Broadband and any Managed Installation (an engineer installation Sky arranges) without a reason, counted from the latest of: your Wireless Router (Sky's hub) being delivered, the service being activated, or you receiving the terms.

Sky refunds what you've paid, including equipment delivery, but you pay a proportionate amount for any service you asked to start during cooling-off. One-off activation or set-up fees aren't refunded after activation, and a Managed Installation charge isn't refunded unless you cancel before 3.30pm on the working day before the visit.

Sky's terms list three ways to cancel in cooling-off: call 03442 41 44 14, write to Sky Subscribers Services Limited, PO Box 43, Livingston, West Lothian EH54 7DD, or use the contact options on Sky's "Cancel Sky Broadband" help page, giving your name, account number, address, postcode, phone number and email. Return the router without undue delay using the returns method Sky provides; the terms say return costs are yours. The legal rules are in our guide to the broadband cooling-off period.

Switching away from Sky: let the new provider handle it

Moving to another provider at the same address? You don't need to cancel Sky first. Sky's help page says you can normally just order with the new provider, and Sky Broadband and Sky Talk cancel automatically when the new service is activated; Sky's terms say the contract ends when Sky is notified through One Touch Switch, the home broadband switching process set by Ofcom, the communications regulator.

You contact only the new provider. Sky, as the provider you're leaving, must then send you switching information, including any early termination charges and the effect on other services you have with it. Read it before the switch date: the switch can happen as soon as the next day, and Sky keeps supplying you until the new service is live.

When One Touch Switch may not cover your move

Ofcom's switching rules cover services provided at a fixed location, and Ofcom has said that includes some services delivered over mobile broadband when they're used at a fixed location (as summarised by the law firm decoded.legal). None of the sources we checked says how a move to 4G or 5G home broadband, or to satellite, is handled in practice, so ask the new provider whether it will switch you using One Touch Switch. Sky's April 2025 terms say switching outside One Touch Switch needs at least 31 days' notice, so ask the new provider in writing; if it won't use One Touch Switch, treat the move as a cancellation and get the new service working before your notice runs out, as our guide to moving to 4G, 5G or satellite broadband explains.

Cancelling Sky Broadband without switching

If nobody is taking over your line (you're moving abroad, say, or moving in with someone who already has broadband), you give Sky notice yourself. The first question is how much.

How much notice? Sky's documents disagree

Sky document

Notice it states

When

Help page "How to cancel your Sky Broadband" (content dated 27 August 2026)

At least 14 days

Outside cooling-off, unless you're switching

Sky Broadband and Sky Talk terms (from April 2025)

At least 31 days

Ending at or after the minimum term without switching, or switching outside One Touch Switch

We can't tell you which applies to you. Check the termination section of your Contract Summary, ask Sky to confirm the date your service and billing stop, and keep that date in writing.

How to give Sky notice

Sky's terms say notice by phone (03442 41 44 14) or Sky's online messaging is processed straight away. Notice by letter or email (mysky@sky.uk) takes effect only once Sky has spoken to you and verified the account, though it then counts from when you sent it.

If you know when a new connection will go live, Sky's help page says it can arrange the cancellation as close to that date as possible, subject to your notice period. If you're moving home or using a right to leave Sky has told you about, the page asks you to use its contact options rather than the standard route.

Your final Sky bill

  • Keep your Direct Debit running. Sky says further payments may still be due.
  • Expect a bill for the month ahead. Sky takes payments a month in advance.
  • Credit takes 45 days. Any credit goes back to your bank 45 days after the service ends.
  • ETCs can go on your card. Sky's terms let it charge one to a card it holds, after reasonable notice.

How Sky works out an early termination charge

Sky charges ETCs on Broadband, Talk and Line Rental only if the service ends during your minimum term for a reason the contract doesn't allow; there's none afterwards. Sky says it will tell you whether one applies and how much. Its help page sets out the method:

  1. Start with the product's monthly charge.
  2. Take off the business costs Sky saves and a discount for being paid early ("accelerated receipt"). That gives the monthly ETC rate in Sky's published ETC table.
  3. Deduct any discount you get on that subscription.
  4. Multiply by the months and days left in your minimum term.
  5. Round the Broadband and Talk totals up to the nearest 25p.

The amount also reflects days already billed in advance, so Sky says it may not be an exact multiple of the monthly rate, and its terms cap it at what you'd have paid for the rest of the minimum term, less costs saved and the benefit of early payment. Sky TV ETCs are different: they're charged upfront when you cancel. To decide whether paying a fee is worth it, see our guide to leaving broadband early without an exit fee.

When you can leave Sky early without an exit fee

Situation

What Sky's terms or help pages say

Sky makes a change that isn't exclusively to your benefit

You can leave without ETCs if Sky has told you of that right (not for purely administrative changes or ones imposed by law).

You move and your Sky product isn't available at the new address

You can leave without ETCs; Sky may ask for proof.

Your speed stays below Sky's guaranteed minimum

Report it and give Sky 30 days to fix it; if the low speed persists (and has lasted 3 consecutive days), you can move to a lower-speed product or leave without ETCs.

Your service keeps dropping out

If a continuous or regularly recurring unplanned loss of service stops you reaching the internet and Sky can't fix it, you can leave without ETCs; any service credit is assessed case by case.

Sky breaks the terms

You can end the contract on seven days' notice without ETCs.

Moving in with an existing Sky customer, moving abroad, or an Armed Forces posting

Reasons for which Sky may ask for supporting documents when deciding whether to remove ETCs.

For a change, an unfixed speed problem or repeated drop-outs, Sky's terms say to give notice within 30 days of receiving Sky's notice, so don't sit on a price-change letter or a message saying a fault can't be fixed.

Sending Sky proof to have an ETC removed

Sky's supporting-documents help page says to cancel first, then email proof to etcs@sky.uk with your reason and account details; Sky aims to review it within 72 hours. Timing matters: Sky applies ETCs 16 days after the cancellation completes and recommends sending documents within 12 days. If proof is accepted after the charge is taken, Sky credits it back.

For an address Sky can't serve, accepted proof includes a signed tenancy or lease, mortgage or solicitor completion documents, a landlord or letting agent letter, a council tax bill or the electoral register; screenshots, emails you've written yourself and bills for your current address aren't accepted. Before you move, check what's on offer at the new address through our broadband deals by area pages.

Leaving after a Sky or NOW price-change notice

Sky sells broadband as "variable": its terms say prices can change during the minimum term with at least one calendar month's written notice (rises required by law, such as VAT, are handled separately). NOW's terms also say prices may change during the minimum term.

That notice can be your way out. Sky's terms and NOW's Broadband & Calls terms both say you can leave without ETCs after a change that isn't exclusively to your benefit, if they've told you about that right, by giving notice within 30 days of their notice. ISPreview's reports of recent rises, and NOW's own help page on its 2026 rise, described 31 days, so follow the deadline in your own notice.

  • Sky, April 2026: ISPreview reported (updated 18 February 2026) that from 1 April 2026 "For Broadband, most customers will see a £3 increase"; social tariffs weren't affected, and broadband and talk customers had 31 days from notification to leave without penalty.
  • NOW, July 2026: NOW's help page on changes to NOW Broadband memberships (checked 14 October 2026) says the prices of its broadband plans rose by £3 a month, showing in bills from 3 July 2026. Customers on an offer kept their discounted price until the offer ended but still paid £3 a month more; NOW Broadband Basics, its social tariff, was not affected; and customers within their minimum term could cancel without early termination charges by calling NOW within 31 days of receiving the price-increase notification. NOW adds that the notification email came from Sky rather than NOW and was genuine.
  • NOW, July 2025 (the year before): ISPreview reported on 13 May 2025 a similar £3 a month rise from bills on or after 5 July 2025, with the same 31-day exit and Basics exemption.

The 2026 windows for both Sky and NOW have now closed. NOW's exit-fee help page reflects its July 2026 change too: it lists higher monthly ETC rates for contracts ending on or after 3 July 2026. When the next notice lands, note the date you received it and, if you want to leave, contact Sky (or call NOW) rather than just ordering elsewhere. Our guides to mid-contract price rises and your rights when a provider changes your contract cover the wider rules.

Sky TV, Sky Talk and Sky Mobile have their own rules

Sky's help pages say Sky TV and Sky Mobile stay active when you cancel or switch broadband, so you cancel them separately.

  • Sky Talk (Sky's home phone service) ends with your broadband, and cancelling Sky Talk also cancels Sky Broadband, which can't then be re-ordered on its own. Sky's Sky Talk help page says 14 days' notice, but the Sky Talk terms (April 2025, conditions 8.5 and 8.11) say at least 31 days, so get the date in writing. To keep your number, read our guide to keeping your landline number when you switch.
  • Sky TV needs 31 days' notice, which can't end before the minimum term finishes, and any ETC is charged upfront.
  • Sky Mobile is left by requesting a PAC or STAC (mobile switching codes) when you move provider; ETCs apply within the minimum term, and payments on a Credit Agreement, such as one for a handset, carry on if you cancel the SIM plan.

Whether your Sky TV keeps working over another company's broadband depends on how you get it: our guides to keeping your TV when you change broadband provider and multiroom TV over broadband explain what to check.

Returning your Sky router and boosters

Sky's Wireless Router and any Boosters are on loan: its terms say they're supplied at no cost and remain Sky's property, and its help page warns of a non-return fee if you don't send them back.

  • Wait for the returns information. Sky sends it, with packaging and a pre-paid label where applicable.
  • Note the deadline. You get at least 30 days after the returns information is sent.
  • Miss it and you pay. Sky charges a Non-return Charge equal to the equipment's value and may disable the kit. Paying doesn't make it yours.
  • Late still helps. Return it within three years and Sky credits the charge, less a reasonable deduction if the kit wasn't kept in good condition.

Sky's "return or recycle" help page takes you through the steps for each item. Keep proof of postage until a final bill arrives with no equipment charge.

Cancelling NOW Broadband

NOW's help page says cancelling or switching NOW Broadband also cancels NOW calls and line rental at the same time. Your other NOW memberships, such as TV, are separate: cancel each one in your account's Membership settings by selecting Cancel next to it.

Switching from NOW to another provider

For most moves you don't need to contact NOW: order with the new provider. NOW says to call it if you're switching to Virgin Media's cable service or full fibre (FTTP) and not keeping your number, or if NOW has told you that you can leave early without charges. Moving to Sky or NOW Powered by Sky full fibre is the exception: NOW says you can't take your number to those anyway, so there's no need to contact it. Our NOW broadband deals page shows NOW's current range if you'd rather change package.

Cancelling NOW without switching

Call NOW or email customerservices@nowtv.com. NOW may call to verify the account (it can't cancel without doing so), but your notice period starts on the day it receives your request. Don't cancel your payment arrangement, as NOW says payments or refunds may still be due.

For the Saver plan, NOW's Broadband & Calls contract (April 2025) says ending at or after the minimum term without a same-line switch needs at least 31 days' notice, charged as normal. No Contract customers can cancel any time before the next month and choose whether service runs to the end of the paid month or ends the next day.

NOW Broadband Powered by Sky is different. NOW's terms page says it is "Supplied by Sky" and NOW's website sends you to sky.com to buy it, but we found no published notice period for it (Sky's own broadband terms ask for at least 31 days when you cancel without switching). Ask NOW which terms apply to your account and get your end date in writing.

To stop an order before it goes live, call before 3pm on the day before go-live or the engineer visit. The Broadband & Calls contract sets a 14-day legal cooling-off period from the later of hub delivery, activation or receiving the terms, and says NOW may offer a longer one, told to you when you buy. Within 31 days of your line going live, NOW's cancellation page lets you message instead of calling.

NOW exit fees, free exits and equipment

NOW's help page on ETCs covers the memberships it lists (Super Fibre, Fab Fibre and Brilliant Broadband): contract plans have a 12-month minimum term, No Contract customers who paid a one-off fee pay no ETC, and the calculation mirrors Sky's, down to rounding up to the nearest 25p.

NOW Broadband Powered by Sky has a speed guarantee: if download speed to the Sky Hub drops below the guaranteed minimum for three or more consecutive days, you can leave the broadband and Talk contracts without ETCs until 30 days after NOW confirms it can't be fixed. Separately, ISPreview reported on 29 April 2025 that NOW had told customers on older part-fibre packages their NOW Hub no longer gets (or will stop getting) security updates, that from 31 July 2025 a faulty Hub wouldn't be replaced, and that if that happened they could end the service straight away without termination fees. If your old NOW Hub fails, ask NOW whether that still applies.

The Sky Hub supplied with NOW Broadband Powered by Sky is loaned free and must be returned when the subscription ends. For older NOW Hubs and TV boxes, NOW says to create a free Royal Mail returns label online and drop the parcel at a Post Office (or print the label at a Royal Mail Customer Service Point), removing batteries first.

Your Sky or NOW leaving checklist

  1. Find your minimum term and exit fee in your Contract Summary.
  2. Check for a free exit: cooling-off, a price-change notice, a move Sky can't follow, or an unfixed speed problem.
  3. Switching? Order with the new provider and read Sky's switching information. Cancelling? Confirm the notice period and get your end date in writing.
  4. Deal with Sky TV, Sky Mobile and NOW TV memberships separately; if you use a Sky email address, read our guide to keeping your email address when you switch.
  5. Keep your Direct Debit running until the final bill is settled, then return the hub and boosters before the deadline and check the final bill.

If Sky or NOW won't process your cancellation or the final bill looks wrong, our guide on complaining about your broadband provider explains the next steps.

Cancelling Sky or NOW broadband FAQs

How much notice do I need to give to cancel Sky Broadband?

If you're switching to another provider, you normally don't give Sky notice: the new provider arranges it and Sky Broadband ends when the new service is activated. If you're cancelling outright, Sky's UK help page says at least 14 days, while its April 2025 terms say at least 31 days, so check your Contract Summary and get your end date in writing.

Do I need to contact Sky if I'm switching to another provider?

Usually not. Under One Touch Switch you contact only your new provider, and Sky must send you switching information, including any early termination charges. Contact Sky if the move falls outside One Touch Switch (Sky's terms then ask for 31 days' notice), if you're moving home, or if you're using a right to leave Sky has told you about.

Can I leave Sky without paying if my price goes up?

Often, yes. Sky's terms let you end the contract without early termination charges if it makes a change that isn't exclusively to your benefit and tells you of that right. The terms say to give notice within 30 days of Sky's notice; ISPreview reported a 31-day window for the April 2026 rise. Follow the deadline in your own notice.

Does cancelling Sky Broadband cancel Sky TV or Sky Mobile?

No. Sky's help pages say Sky TV and Sky Mobile stay active when you cancel or switch your broadband, so you cancel them separately. Sky Talk is different: Sky's terms say it ends at the same time as Sky Broadband. Sky TV needs 31 days' notice and can't end before its minimum term finishes.

What happens if I don't return my Sky router?

Sky's terms give you at least 30 days after it sends returns information. Miss that and Sky charges a Non-return Charge equal to the equipment's value and may disable the kit. Return it within three years and Sky credits the charge, less a reasonable deduction if the router wasn't kept in good condition.

How do I cancel NOW Broadband?

If you're switching, you normally just order with the new provider; NOW asks you to call if you're moving to Virgin Media's cable service or full fibre without keeping your number (not needed for Sky or NOW Powered by Sky full fibre). To cancel without switching, call NOW or email customerservices@nowtv.com; your notice starts on the day NOW receives the request, though it may call to verify the account first.
